She Bleeds Tradition

This piece was made in honour of my Great Grandmother, Mabel Bearfoot. In spite of everything she went through at the Mohawk Institute, she created a sustainable life for her four boys. The antlers you see are a mirrored image of a deer antler that hung in her house and now hangs in mine, representing that continued connection of family, generational trauma but also generational healing. The shot wound represents the hits we’ve taken, and the beads bleeding out show that even our deepest wounds still carry our beauty, teachings and traditions. It is something in us no one can erase. 48"x48"
