Christmas Amaryllis and Orchids in Bloom
A few years ago I started growing amaryllis and orchids as a hobby because of their beautiful potential for painting subject matter. I finally figured out that you can successfully grow them year after year if you know their growing cycle and how to take care of them. I even plant them outside. This is an acrylic watercolour painting on a 18"x24" canvas of an amaryllis that bloomed at Christmas last year and inspired me to capture the interesting patterns of light and dark pinks in the large healthy petals. I was delighted that the flower stayed strong and vibrant until my pink Phalaenopsis emerged in February. The dining room window has perfect lighting for both plants and so I set them on my round glass table with a vintage glass vase and studied the reflections. It turned out to be a lovely botanical still life.
